Michael Clifton Weber, Jr. died on Monday, June 9, 2014, at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Cuero, Texas on November 26, 1935, to Michael Clifton Weber and Faye Fischer Weber. He attended Cuero schools and was a 5 sport letterman for the Cuero Gobblers. In 1958 Mike received his Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of Texas at Austin. Upon graduation he joined his father in Cuero, Texas at Weber Motor Company, the family’s Ford dealership. It was a point of pride for Mike that after more than 77 years, the dealership is still owned and operated by the Weber family.
In 1977 he and his wife, Merilyn, purchased the dealership and embarked on 25 years of leadership, accomplishments and friendships within the industry. Mike served on the Board of Directors of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association and also as President of the Houston District Ford Dealer Advertising Fund, Inc. During his tenure he was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades from Ford Motor Company.
Mike’s leadership extended to his love and commitment to his community. Mike was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Cuero and served his Lord in several capacities; usher, Sunday school teacher, and Chairman of the Capital Campaign for the construction of the new sanctuary. He served as President of the Cuero Chamber of Commerce, President of the Cuero Little League and President of the Cuero Lions Club. Mike served on the Board of Directors of the Cuero Heritage Museum, Board of Directors of the Cuero Industrial Foundation and for 20 years served on the board as a Director of Trust Texas Bank. Mike was a proud member of the Cuero Booster Club, the Cuero Golf Association, and Cuero Country Club.
Mike’s devotion to his community did not go unnoticed. In 1972 Mike was the Parade Chairman of the Turkey Trot Centennial Celebration. In 1992 he and his friend and fellow community advocate, Joe Reuss, received the Cuero Community Service Award for their tireless efforts in bringing the Stevenson Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to Cuero. In 2004 he received the Cuero High School Distinguished Service Award. In 2008 Mike received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from the Lions Club International Foundation. Lastly, he was named Honorary Chapter Farmer of the Future Farmers of America.
Mike Weber was never at a loss for things to do in his spare time; therefore, retirement spelled opportunity. His lifelong love of sports led him to mount a 3 part series of exhibitions at the Cuero Heritage Museum highlighting the storied history of the Cuero High School & Daule High School football programs. Following in the footsteps of his many family members Mike exhibited a talent and interest in art from an early age. Mike’s preferred medium was oil and his subject matter included scenes from his surroundings in Cuero as well as his beloved Rockport. Mike was known to paint on a variety of materials including golf balls, eggs, oyster shells, palm tree bark and more. When not at his easel Mike could be found fishing, golfing or cheering on his favorite sports teams – his beloved fighting Gobblers, the Longhorns, the Spurs, the Cowboys, and yes, even the Aggies (the alma mater of a few of his grandchildren).
Mike Weber was the consummate son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was admired and respected by all for his kindness, generosity and gentle nature.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 58 years, Merilyn Richards Weber, whom he affectionately called “Blondie”. Mike is survived by his 3 children, Katherine Weber Wilson (Kerry) of Waxahachie, Michael Clifton Weber, III (Sharon), Richard Charles Weber (Nikki) all of Cuero. He is survived by 8 grandchildren, Jonathon Cox (Jaclyn) of Cuero, Abigayle Hunt (Lance) and Mitchell Cox all of Waxahachie, Michael Clifton Weber, IV (Morgan) of Fort Worth, Campbell Weber (and fiancé Erika) of Waxahachie, Hannah Weber, Madelyn Weber and Audrey Weber of Hallettsville. He is survived by 6 great grandchildren, Fayth Hunt & Ella Hunt of Waxahachie, Julianna Cox, Jessa Rose Cox and Jennings Cox, all of Cuero, and Anders Weber of Fort Worth. He is survived by his sister, Mary Gayle Brindley of Sugar Land. Mike is also survived by his golden retriever, Goldie, his loyal companion and friend.
In the vigorous and creative pursuit of his dreams, visions and many interests, Mike Weber left an indelible imprint on his family, friends and community. He will be greatly missed by all.
Pallbearers include Jonathon Cox, Michael Weber IV, Mitchell Cox, Campbell Weber, Paul Brindley, Mitchell Brindley, Hans Brindley, and Lance Hunt. Honorary Pallbearers include all Weber Motor Company Employees, past and present.
Visitation will be at Freund Funeral Home from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday evening June 12, 2014. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday June 13, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Cuero. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Cuero, DeWitt Medical Foundation, and Cuero Heritage Museum.
