Reuben Lee Gohmert, 90, of Meyersville, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015. He was born June 26, 1924 in Ratcliff to the late Reinhold H. & Linda Diebel Gohmert. On October 21, 1945 he married the love of his life, Virgie Ideus Gohmert. He was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, being a former choir member for many years. He was baptized on August 10, 1924 and was confirmed on April 2, 1939. He was a rancher and retired pipe welder, having served on the Executive Board of Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 790, Victoria, for many years. He was a former trustee of the M.I.S.D. He was a member of the American Legion, Cuero VFW, and the Meyersville Fire Dept. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II., having served on a submarine tender in the Pacific theater of operations, stationed for a time at the Marshall Islands at Midway.

Daddy's hands weren't always gentle but you grew to understand there was always unconditional love in daddy's hands. As the patriarch of the family, he taught three generations the value of hard work and was happiest riding his tractor and working his cattle. There was the understanding that your handshake was your word. He taught there was an inner peace that comes while fishing as the sun sets or listening to the sounds of nature as the sun rises in a deer blind (killing his last deer at the age of 90), the simple joys of a good game of dominos and the lesson that when life gets tough to turn to God and then accept God's answer. Daddy had an unwavering faith that God would always take care of us. His legacy of true love that he shared with Mom for 70 years will be an inspiration to us as we remember he always kissed her good night with “Schlaf goot, maichen” (Sleep good, maiden). He loved his family dearly and was so proud of each and every one of them, rejoicing at each accomplishment, be it child, grandchild, or great-grandchild. He leaves a big vacancy in our family and will be sorely missed. So in Daddy’s favorite good bye to any family member we say “We love you bushel and a peck, daddy.”

He is survived by his beloved wife, Virgie Ideus Gohmert; children, Aletha and Robert Blain of Meyersville, JoBeth and Jimmy Caskey of Meyersville, Gordon and Jenny Gohmert of Dallas, and Glenda Henry of Cuero; sisters, Ruth (Mrs. Elroy) Peters, and Elizabeth (Mrs. Mickey) Beard; sister-in-law, Joan (Mrs. Charles) Gohmert; eleven grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
