Shirley Ann (Stevens) Schorre, 81, a life-long resident of Cuero, died peacefully in Austin on March 21, 2016, surrounded by family, a few days after suffering a massive stroke. Wife of the late Elwyn F. Schorre, Shirley Ann is survived by daughters Jan (Allan) Reagan of Leander, Pam (Terry) Haun of Meyersville, Valerie (Clay) Whites of Ingleside on the Bay, son Mike (Mary Ann) Stubbs of Cuero and stepsons Rex and Jeff Schorre (Karen), both of Cuero. Shirley Ann’s granddaughters are Mindy Davis, Nikki Nagel, Kelsie Murray, Brooke Luchak, Megan Whites, and Ashley Stubbs. Her grandsons are Clint Hahn, Vance, Kyle and Cody Stubbs, James Watson, and Clay Whites II. Shirley Ann has 12 great-grandchildren, and many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

Shirley Ann was the third child of the late Alfred David Stevens and Laura Vernor Gwinn Stevens, and was preceded in death by her siblings Lt. Col. Richard Stevens and Muriel Tarkington. They were direct descendants of Patrick Dowlearn, an original settler of Green Dewitt’s colony in the 1820’s, of Robert Rankin, the only Revolutionary War officer buried in Texas, Amanda Doolittle, a survivor of the “Runaway Scrape” in 1836, and numerous Civil War veterans, both Confederate and Union. Her first husband, Bryan M. Stubbs Jr., also predeceased her.

Shirley Ann spent much of her business career working in the medical field – she even volunteered for years after her professional retirement as a Pink Lady in the Cuero Hospital Gift Shop. She also loved quilting and sewing. She volunteered for the DeWitt County Extension office and volunteered for many years for the Cuero Livestock Show and Rodeo. In later years, Shirley Ann enjoyed ranching with her husband, Elwyn.

With a deep personal and career interest in medicine, Shirley Ann decided to donate her body to the University of Texas San Antonio Medical School in hopes that she might help advance medical research and somehow help save lives.

In lieu of cards or flowers, the family welcomes memorial gifts to the medical charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank the staff of St David’s Hospital ICU in Austin for their tireless dedication to Shirley Ann, as well as the amazing staff of Hospice Austin’s Christopher House for their devotion to providing a wonderful end of life environment. Shirley Ann’s children will host a “happy memory” gathering, with refreshments, for family and friends from 2-4 p.m. on May 7 at Millie’s on Main located at 115 E. Main Street in Cuero.
