
Mitchie (“Mitzie”) Ann Coppedge Wallace Byrd, former resident of Nixon, passed away in Weatherford, Texas, on Dec. 2, 2016. Funeral services will be held at Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Nixon Cemetery.
Born in Cuero on Oct. 6, 1919, Mitchie was the fourth of five children of John Lawrence and Myrtle Mae (Stubbs) Coppedge. She grew up in Concrete and Cuero and graduated from Yoakum High School.
During World War II she married Charles (Chuck) Weber of Chicago and gave birth to her first son, Charles Edward. That marriage ended in divorce, and in 1947, she married Stanley Marian Wallace who adopted Charles. Three children: Cynthia Ann, Stanley Michael, and Melissa Jane were born to this union. Stanley passed away in 1981. In 1994 Mitchie married Robert Byrd.
Following his untimely death in 1995 she moved from Nixon to Fort Worth, Texas, then to Weatherford, Texas in 2012 to be nearer her daughters.
She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and friend and faced the many challenges of her life with great dignity, strength and courage. Despite her failing health in recent years, she maintained a cheerful and positive attitude, bringing joy and comfort to her family.
Mitchie was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Stanley Wallace and Robert Byrd; brothers, Finley (Bud), Raleigh (Coot), and Ralph (Dick) Coppedge; and her son-in-law, SSgt.
Robert Deeks. She is survived by her children: Charles Wallace and wife, Patricia of Alachua, Florida; Cynthia Scheffler and husband, Frank of Peaster, Texas; Michael Wallace of Denton; and Melissa Deeks of Weatherford, Texas; eight grandchildren and spouses; and 14 great-grandchildren, as well as her younger brother, John Coppedge of Cuero and numerous nieces and nephews.
