II Timothy 4: 6-8
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Hence forth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that live his appearing.
On Jan. 31, 1927 a baby girl was born to James Monroe and Emma Enoch Battles. The third of five children, was give the name Lucy Mae. She grew up in the Pleasantville Community, attending Public School in Pleasantville and Concrete. She professed her hope in Christ in 1941 during Pastriage of the Rev. Ned Henderson united with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she remained until her passing. She was a member of the Jr. choir and also Jr. Mission where at one time served as President. Lucy graduated from EA Kemp High School in Bryan after attending Daule High Cuero one session. She graduated from Mary Allen Jr. College in Crockett. Taught elementary school in the Concrete community for three years.
On Nov. 25, 1948 she was united in holy matrimony to Elvin Wright, Jr. to this union four children were born. Because of a love for people and the desire to serve, she went to Nursing School at the Victoria College becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She dedicated her life to this profession working at the Cuero Hospital Foundation and Community Hospital for 34 years. After retiring from the hospital she continued caring for the disabled at their homes. After retirement she became a faithful missionary worker as well as Sunday School teacher for adult women class. Lucy passed away Feb. 7, 2017.
She leaves to cherish her memory, daughters, Phyllis Thomas (Leslie) and Velma Wright; sons, Elvin Derrell Wright (Yolanda) and Kelvin Wright (Sherrie) and other daughter, Josephine Thompson; 10 grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren; brother, Elmo Battles (Shirley) and a host of other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elvin Wright Jr., brother, Thaddeus Battles; and sister Vivian Friar.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Feb. 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. George Franklin officiating. Interment to follow in Hillside Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Michael Battles, Charles Battles, Ted Battles Jr., Sidney Battles, Ricky Battles and Victor Friar. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren and Deacon Allen Harvey.
