Edythe Marie Gansow Lemke

Edythe Marie Gansow Lemke of Yorktown passed from this world Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015. Her son Kurt Lemke, and daughter-in-law Diana Dworaczyk, were with her and holding her hands to the end. She was 86 years old.

Edythe was born October 24, 1928 in Yorktown, Texas, the only child of Arthur and Bertha (Waitschies) Gansow. She is survived by Kurt and Diana and their children Kami Lane Lemke of Seattle, Washington and Aaron Gray Lemke of Austin. Edythe was always “Mimi” to them. She was preceded in death by her parents and Kurt’s father Felton Lemke.

It was fitting that Edythe departed on Easter Sunday. She was known for living and sharing the same kind of unconditional love for others that Christ asked of us all, and to which most of us can only aspire. And while her immediate family was small, she was loved by many extended family members, friends and caregivers.

Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful women who cared for Edythe so lovingly over the last several months – Vickie Reyes, Ludy Garcia, Christine Johnson, Ermalinda Villa, Ramona Yanes, Carole Guzman, and most especially her dear friend and caregiver for so many years – Mary Partida. Our family is also extremely grateful for the kind and loving care given to Edythe by her former classmate, friend for over 80 years, and personal physician, Dr. Larry Riedel of Victoria. Larry stayed at Detar all day Easter Sunday to be near Edythe and her family to the end.

Visitation will be held at Massey Funeral Home in Yorktown Thursday, April 9 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Rev. Scott Skogen will lead a funeral service Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 234 N Church Street in Yorktown – across the street from Edythe’s birthplace and childhood home. Graveside service will be at Westside Cemetery in Yorktown, followed by a reception at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 234 N Church Street, Yorktown, Texas 78164, or to the Boy Scouts of America, Lemke Memorial Fund, 12500 North IH 35

Ashton William McNeese

Ashton William McNeese, 22, of Humble, TX left his temporary home on this earth on March 22, 2015 to continue his eternal life in heaven with Jesus Christ whom he received as his Lord and Savior at the age of 8 years old.

He began as a son, born January 26, 1993 in Cuero, TX to his loving parents, David and Michelle McNeese. He soon became a protective, big brother to his sister Cortney McNeese and enjoyed their many discussions on any and every subject. Ashton was to everybody exactly what they needed at just the right time; which means he is something different to each person... from giving advice on why to use a base coat of fingernail polish first, to how to rig a failing 4 wheeler in order to continue riding through cow patty infested mud, up to giving someone in need the shirt off his back (if he happened to be wearing one at that time). Ashton was also adventurous, outgoing and never afraid to try anything new. He was proud of conquering his fear of needles and heights by getting a large cross tattoo containing his granny’s name and riding around in a fully extended man lift for work. He always loved hanging out with his friends, shooting guns, playing video games, freestyle bmx riding all over town, muddin' in anything that would go, dancing and listening to music, (all while being extremely respectful to friends' parents). Ashton's recent favorite hobby was making contest winning, super-cell sized vape clouds.  He used to say he was shy and unsure of himself, but that's not what we saw when he entered a room.  That huge smile and deep belly laugh lit up the room like no other and brought fun and laughter to so many situations, especially when he walked in wearing neon from head to toe or his grandpa's brown corduroy jacket, no shirt, shorts and boots.  He was also such a deep thinker and adored having long heart to heart conversations with his family, friends and with God.  Ashton would tend to wear his heart on his sleeve so you could usually tell if he was upset or hurt.  That didn't last very long, though, because he was quick to forgive and forget and move on with the friendship.  That must be why so many people love him and had such a lasting connection with him no matter how long their interaction.

Ashton recently found new life and embraced it with every cell of his body. His enthusiasm for life touched so many. He was so proud of his new life that it was contagious and felt by all who knew him well. He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.  We will always remember his infectious smile and his loving and caring personality.  We are broken hearted with an Ashton sized hole in our hearts, but we know he is enjoying eternal happiness in heaven with no traces of glitter around him!

Ashton is survived by his parents, David and Michelle McNeese of Humble; his sister, Cortney McNeese and soon to be nephew Brayden William Charles Harris; grandparents, Michael Sturm of Cuero; Brenda Lee of Dayton, TX; and Bill and Loa McNeese of Cypress, TX; his great-grandma, Nancy Lovejoy originally of Lafayette, IN; uncles, Jim McNeese (Heather) of Humble, Chris McNeese of Humble, Dennis Sturm of Cuero and Chet Sturm (Tracy) of Cuero.

He is preceded in death by his Granny, Christina Sturm; Paw Paw, Clearance “Buddy” Lee; and uncle, Michael Joe Sturm and his pit bull puppy, “Ace.”

Services were held Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 2 P.M. at First Baptist Church in Cuero with Colby Sturm officiating.  Interment was held at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero following the services.  Pallbearers were Dennis Sturm, Chet Sturm, James McNeese, Christopher McNeese, Quentin Harris, Josh Smith, Devan Gravell, Brandon Mayo, Chase Harrison, Bobby Soto and Daniel Lewis.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Recovery at www.cornerstonerecovery.org or at 6699 Portwest Dr. #140, Houston, TX 77024 OR to Bibles For Peoples at www.Bibles4peoples.com. (Please note in the memo box that it is in honor of Ashton McNeese. The physical address is 130 E. Main St., Cuero, TX 77954. Both of these organizations were very close to Ashton's heart.

Beverly Ann Kurtz

Beverly Ann “Granny A” Kurtz, 66, of Victoria passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015. She was born October 18, 1948, in Yoakum to Bessie Chomout Staehr and the late Fred Staehr Sr.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Steve Kurtz Jr. of Victoria; daughters, Stephanie Migura and husband, Carlton of Meyersville and Robin Milliorn and husband, Kevin of Houston; sister, Gloria Johnson and husband, John of Sun City, Texas; brother, Fred Staehr Jr. and wife, Karen of Victoria; grandchildren, Cameron and Stephen Migura and Natalynn, Sydney and Connor Milliorn.

In 1967 Ann graduated from Yoakum High School where she was an active member of the band playing the clarinet. Ann attended Baldwin College and received her junior accounting degree. After working for several years Ann decided to become a stay at home mom once having Stephanie. When Stephanie and Robin were older she went back to work at Howell Middle School as the lunchroom monitor for 20 years.

Ann started out with her daughter’s community involvement as their Girl Scout Troop Leader. Then became an active adult leader/club manager in Victoria County 4-H where she received the Outstanding Adult leader award. Then as her grandsons became old enough for 4-H she helped them make many items that they entered in the Cuero Livestock Homemaking Show.

Sewing was a part of Ann all of her life. Her mother Bessie taught her to sew and Ann passed those skills down to her daughters, grandsons and granddaughters. All homecoming and prom dresses were made for Stephanie and Robin. She even sewed bridesmaids/formal dresses for only a few special friends of the family. Her granddaughter Natalynn had very special dress-up gowns made by Granny A.

Not only did she sew, but she taught herself to crochet. She has made numerous special crocheted baby blankets for family, friends, daughter’s friends and loved ones.

Later in life Ann enjoyed quilting which she learned also from her mother Bessie. She was an active member of the Heirloom Stitchers Guild of Cuero. Every month she enjoyed getting together with her friends to work on different projects. Each grandchild received a special quilt made by their Granny A.

Ann’s favorite past time was playing cards. She had a special bag that was strictly for cards that carried all the decks for hand and foot along with a card shuffler as well. This bag was even taken on a cruise with her girlfriends so they could play while on the boat. Each month Ann and a special group of girls gathered at each other’s houses for a day of card playing.

Annual family Frio River trips were the highlight of Ann’s summer. Ann would spend months preparing all the details of the trip with her daughters Stephanie and Robin. Emails back and forth about what food everyone was bringing, to the closet in the house that was used just to store items to take each year. Ann’s favorite place was on the Frio River; didn’t matter if she was in an inner-tube, sitting on the river bank, making s’mores or just playing cards; the Frio River trip was always looked forward to.

Steve and Ann enjoyed family vacations from the West to East Coasts to just going to the casinos.

The family will receive friends at Rosewood Funeral Chapels Friday, April 24, 2015, from 6 to 8pm and then on Saturday, April 25, 2015, from 3 to 5 pm. Following the Saturday service will be a reception at the St. Donald meeting room in the education building at Holy Family Church.

Daddy's hands weren't always gentle but you grew to understand there was always unconditional love in daddy's hands. As the patriarch of the family, he taught three generations the value of hard work and was happiest riding his tractor and working his cattle. There was the understanding that your handshake was your word. He taught there was an inner peace that comes while fishing as the sun sets or listening to the sounds of nature as the sun rises in a deer blind (killing his last deer at the age of 90), the simple joys of a good game of dominos and the lesson that when life gets tough to turn to God and then accept God's answer. Daddy had an unwavering faith that God would always take care of us. His legacy of true love that he shared with Mom for 70 years will be an inspiration to us as we remember he always kissed her good night with “Schlaf goot, maichen” (Sleep good, maiden). He loved his family dearly and was so proud of each and every one of them, rejoicing at each accomplishment, be it child, grandchild, or great-grandchild. He leaves a big vacancy in our family and will be sorely missed. So in Daddy’s favorite good bye to any family member we say “We love you bushel and a peck, daddy.”
