Helen Mungia, 75, of Yorktown, passed away Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013. 
 
She was born May 8, 1938 in Gonzales, to the late Jacinto and Sebastiana Casares. 
 
Helen is survived by her daughter, Lisa Ann (Adam) Estrada; Sons, Cleo (Mary) Mungia, Richard Mungia and Edward Mungia; brothers, Hilario Casares and Margarito Casares; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cleo Mungia Sr.; and son, Louis Mungia.
 
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 at Finch Funeral Chapel. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7 at San Luis Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the San Luis Catholic Cemetery.

Bennie Rae Lane

   Bennie Rae Lane, 82, of Cuero passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2013. She was born November 27, 1930 in DeWitt County to the late S.A. and Alice Humphreys Lowrance. She married her beloved husband, Arthur Dutton Lane, on August 4, 1951 in Yoakum. She was Co-Chairman of the DeWitt County Historical Museum and Chair of the Fellowship and Worship Committees. Bennie was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church and was  active in the Presbyterian Women. She was a loving wife, mother, aunt, and sister. Bennie loved spending time with her grandchildren, great nieces and nephews. She was an integral part of the community and her smile could light up and room.
   She is survived by her daughters, Candy Lane Thompson (Bill) of West Palm Beach, FL and Sherri Lane Henwood of New Braunfels; son, Robert Dutton Lane of Tilden; sister, Dorothy Lynn Faulkner of Victoria; and grandchildren, Amber Lea Lane, Dutton Trevor Lane, and Candyce Nicole Henwood.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters, Alice Wendel and Sydney Wuest.
A visitation will be held Thursday, August 15, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 16, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bill Cotman officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. 
   Pallbearers include Bobby Lane, Frank Burns III, Clint Stiles, Don Stiles, Jr., John Bell, and Patrick Bell.
Honorary Pallbearers include Bucky Sager and Smokey Wilson.

Arthur M. Green, Jr., 67, son of the late Blanche and Arthur M. Green, formerly of Cuero and Victoria, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013.
 
He is survived by his sister, Sarah Green Waldrop and husband, Steve Waldrop; nephews, Brad Waldrop of College Station and Dr. William Waldrop and wife, Juliet, of St. Louis and their four children, Parker, Vivien, Charlie, and Hudson.
 
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 at Freund Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Cotman officiating. Interment will follow at Thomaston Cemetery.

She is survived by her daughter, Bebbla A. Ushery (Harold) of Detroit; sisters, Vivian Thomas (Tommy) and Angelene Campbell, both of Cuero; brother, Robert C. Gardner Sr. of Yoakum; and grandson, Kevin Ushery of Detroit.

Lois Evelyn Day, 87, of Houston formerly of Cuero, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013. 
 
She was born June 26, 1926 in Cuero to the late Frank R. and Erna A. Buehrig Thieme. She married her beloved husband William Dalton Day at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Cuero. After several years of being a medical technician, she and her husband started a successful construction supply business. Lois also loved to ranch and was an avid bridge player.
 
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Day; son, William Dalton Day, Jr. and wife, Mary; grandchildren, Dawn Anderson and Stephen Day; great-granddaughter, Emily Glawson; sister, Helen Talley and family.
 
Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25 at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Karl Biermann officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.

David William Smolik

David William Smolik, 58, lifetime resident of Cuero, passed away Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013. 
 
He was born March 13, 1955 in Karnes City to the late William B. and Mildred A. Kolodziej Smolik. He married his beloved wife, Camille Whitten Smolik on Feb. 15, 1975. He was a loving father to his only son, Russell Smolik. He considered himself a jack-of-all-trades. He worked in commercial construction, was a state meat inspector at the age of 19 and spent many years auctioneering for local causes. For over 40 years, David worked in the meat business, first alongside his father and then as owner of Smolik’s Quality Meats and BBQ. David loved the outdoors and spent many hours ranching, deer hunting and tending to his garden. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Cuero.
 
He leaves behind his wife, Camille Whitten Smolik; son, William Russell Smolik (Amber) of Sugar Land; brother, Michael Smolik (Gail) of Mathis; three sisters, Cynthia Smith (Michael) of Richmond, Kathleen Leske (Bob) of Cuero, and Tami Piemonte (Joe) of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents.
 
Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 at First Baptist Church in Cuero with Brother Glen Robertson officiating.

Irene Elsie Woehler Bryant, age 96, went to be with the Lord on July 30, 2013. 
 
Irene was born on June 12, 1917 in Yorktown to parents Otto Woehler and Ella Machost Woehler. 
 
Irene is preceded in death by her parents Otto and Ella Woehler, husband Albert M. Bryant and son Jerry W. Bryant. 
She is survived by her son Johnnie Bryant and wife Shirley and daughter Barbara Chaumont. Irene leaves behind five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. 
 
Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 1 at McWilliams Funeral Home. Funeral Service was at 11 a.m. Aug. 2 at McWilliams Funeral Home.

Richard Oscar Gisler Sr.

Richard Oscar Gisler Sr., 77, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, in his home in Runge. 
 
He was born in Kenedy on July 10, 1936, the second child of Bertha “Bert” Bingham Gisler and Erwin L. “Peanut” Gisler. Richard married Alfreda Pargmann, of Runge, on June 25, 1956. He joined the Marine Corps and served honorably for three years as a wing mechanic. Later, he worked as an oil field mud logger and farmer/rancher. Together with his brother, Jerry, they established Gisler Brothers Logging, Inc. in 1978 in Runge. In 1992, after being diagnosed with a heart condition, he received a heart transplant in Salt Lake City. He then retired from the oil industry and continued to work on the farm where he proudly established his own pecan orchard. Richard was a proud serving member of Runge’s St. Paul Lutheran Church, NALC.
 
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Pansy Doreck and Gay Hahn; and his brothers, Erwin C. Gisler, Ronnie Gisler, and Jerry Gisler.
 
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alfreda; daughters, Brenda Boerm (Kenneth Dillon) of Victoria, Carolyn (Jeff) Garwood of Waxsaw, N.C.; Anice (Albert) Morales of Phoenix; Loretta (Scott) Sonsalla of Columbia, S.C.; Kelley (Darren) Drastata of Edna; and son, Richard (Heather) O. Gisler Jr. of Runge. Also surviving are his sisters, Connie (Wayne) Buesing of Nordheim and Janet (Curtis) Rosson of Duncanville; and brother, John (Carmen) Gisler of Pettus. He was also blessed with 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
 
Richard loved tending his pecan trees, fishing at the river, telling stories and having coffee at the ‘liars’ table’ with his many friends.
 
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, and the funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30 at Finch Funeral Home in Runge. Burial will be held at the Runge City Cemetery. 
 
Pallbearers are Cory Boerm, Stephen Boerm, Bo Daniel, Jeff Garwood, Albert Morales, Scott Sonsalla, Brent Gisler, Darren Drastata and Joshua Drastata. Honorary pallbearers are Joshua, Ethan and Daniel Drastata and Gavin Sonsalla.

Velma Lee Leubert, 84, a Kingsville resident, formerly of Cuero, passed away on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013. 

She was born on Oct. 3, 1928 to Edo and Martha Hoepken in Yorktown. 
 
Velma attended Cuero High School. She was a member of Kleberg County Ladies Golf Association. She retired from the Kleberg County Tax Office. She loved her family, lifelong friend, Hallie Forke, her coffee group, golf friends and in the past she was an avid golfer and of course, she enjoyed shopping. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John David “Buddy” Leubert; and son, David Wayne Leubert. 
Velma is survived by her son, Douglas (Susan) Leubert; daughter, Dianne (Roy Medina) Leubert; grandson, Jason (Christina) Leubert, two granddaughters; Amber (Donnie) Perrigue, Erin Leubert; step-granddaughter, Theresa Medina; great granddaughters, Madison Perrigue, Makenna Perrigue and Annabella Medina; brother, Alton (Janie) Hoepken; sister, Dorothy Hester, sister-in-law, Alva (Clarence) Arndt. 
 
Family received friends from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 26. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary. Burial followed at Chamberlain Cemetery.

Beverly Brooks, age 58, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 at Methodist Hospital in Houston.
 
She was born in Moulton on Oct. 27, 1954 to the late Calvis Brooks Sr. and Idella Johnson Brooks.
 
She is preceded in death by father, Calvis Brooks Sr. and one brother Frederick Brooks.
 
She is survived by her mother, Idella Brooks of Cuero; four brothers, Calvis Brooks Jr. (Veda) of San Antonio; Kenny Brooks of Cuero; Ben Brooks Sr. (Adeline) of San Antonio; SMG Ronald Brooks (Ola) of Killeen; two sisters, Della Brooks and Janie Brooks of Cuero; one niece, seven nephews, one great niece and nephew.

Iola “Dolly” Mae Hahn, 80, of Cuero passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. 
 
She was born Sept. 12, 1932 in Shiner to the late Otto and Elsie Flessner Jahn. She married her beloved husband, Albert John Hahn Sr. on Feb. 17, 1952. She worked at Cuero Food Craft for 30 years and was a rancher her whole life. Dolly loved working in her yard and took extra care of her hydrangeas. She also enjoyed bowling, deer hunting, and caring for her grandchildren.
 
She is survived by her son, Albert John Hahn Jr. (Margaret) of Cuero; grandchildren, Mindy Davis (Dwayne) of Georgetown, Clint Hahn (Christi) of Leander, Mark Hahn of Round Rock, and Abigail Hahn of Cuero; great- grandchildren, Lanie and Lexie Davis of Georgetown and Caylee Hahn of Leander.
 
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4 from 6-8 p.m. with a rosary starting at 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father David Berger officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.

She was born Oct. 11, 1957 in Yorktown to the late Porfirio Sr. and Juanita Banda Arguellez. She married her beloved husband, John Del Rosario on March 21, 2009 in Kenedy.
 
She is survived by her sons, Jesse Hernandez III (Jessica) of Covington, Tenn. and Joseph Anthony Hernandez of Mission Valley; Her Yorkie Nala, who was her companion; sisters, Juanita A. DeLaGarza (Leoncio) of Kenedy, Dominga A. Garcia (Felix) of Rockport, and Mary Helen A. Monaghan (John) of Cuero; brothers, Abundio Arguellez, Joe Frank Arguellez, Mario Arguellez (Linda) and Johnny Arguellez (Nicole), all of Cuero, Porfirio Arguellez Jr. (Janie) and Felix Arguellez (Lupe) both of Yorktown, Armando Arguellez (Lisa) of McAllen, Gilbert Arguellez (Rosie) of Karnes City, and Richard Arguellez (Rosie) of Floresville.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents and son, James Ray Hernandez.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Mildred Preiss and Joyce Petering and brothers, B.C. Ohrt, Noel Ohrt, and Neil Ohrt.

Fred “Peter Rabbit” Franklin Jr., 79, of Cuero passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2013.
 
He was born Jan. 20, 1934 in Cheapside to the late Fred Sr. and Callie Lane Franklin. He married his beloved wife, Ora L. Slade in Cuero. Fred was a hard working man, who was self-employed, in the carpenter business his whole life.
 
He is survived by his wife, Ora L. Franklin; daughters, Lisa Jo. Mayfield of Cuero, Shirley A. Houston of California, Colleen Thomas (Donald) of Victoria, and Brenda Thomas (Leonard) of Portland; sons, Johnell Griffin (Barbara) of Austin and Kenneth Barnett of Cuero; sisters, Callie M. Glover of Cuero and Margaret Prince of Edna; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Hodge Franklin and Ervin Franklin.

Larry Carter, 58, of Cuero passed away Friday, Sept. 13, 2013. 
 
He was born Nov. 17, 1954 in Cuero to the late Mattie Belle Carter. Larry worked as an activity director at Victoria Residence and Rehab. He was a director of the Cuero Lions Club for one year, vice president of Cuero Housing Authority for two years, member of Cuero Chamber of Commerce for 15 years, and participated with the American Cancer Society, DeWitt County Hunt Elementary Advisory Council, Cuero ISD Mentoring Program, Travelers Protection Association, and DeWitt County Sheriff Advisory Council. He also participated in the Let’s Stand Together Thanksgiving Dinner for five years, was director of Christmas in the Park for five years, Cuero Visionary and Preservation Director, alternate director for Texas Settlement Region DeWitt County, director for Keep Cuero Beautiful Committee, Cuero Alumni Association director, and on the board of directors for the Cuero Education Foundation.
 
He was a forever fan of the Cuero Gobblers. He enjoyed watching the Gobblers take the field every Friday no matter the weather, home or away. He wouldn’t miss a game yelling “Go Mean Green.”
 
He is survived by his sisters, Deborah Sue Carter of Cuero and Janice Johnson of San Antonio; nieces, Relaine Pitts and Sylvia Carter, both of Houston, Brandi Johnson of San Antonio, S’herronda Dailey of Victoria and Deborah Hamilton of Cuero; nephews, Jason Carter of Beeville, Kenneth Johnson of San Antonio and Kevin “Roy” Hamilton of Austin; and all of his godchildren.
 
He was preceded in death by his mother, sister, Linda Darnell Hamilton–Dailey and brother, Henry Carter.
 
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 at L.E. Meador Encampment Grounds with the Rev. Calvis Brooks officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
 
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the staff and board of directors of the Cuero Chamber of Commerce.
 
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Rosemary Battles, Ruthie Davis, Brenda Martin, Sharon Taylor, Vicki Coppedge, and so many more for their help and generosity in Larry’s time of need.
 
Memorial contributions may be made to New Testament Holiness Church.

Robert “Bobby” Licon

Robert “Bobby” Licon, 65, of Godby Heights, W.Va. was born Dec. 16, 1947 in Cuero, to the late Ortino Sr. and Victoriana Garcia Licon. He departed this life on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 at Logan Region Medical Center at Logan, W.Va.

Licon was a service manager for Southern Amusement in Logan, W.Va., a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict with the US Marine Corps, earning a Purple Heart Medal and was discharged with the rank of Lance Corporal. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 19 and Marine Corp League. 
 
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Ruth Weaver Licon, and two brothers, Joe and Ruben Licon.
 
Survivors include, two daughters, Mellissa Licon (Andy Mayhorn) of Whitman, W.Va. and Ellie Licon of Godby Heights, W.Va.; son, William Charles (Amber) Licon of Kentucky; three sisters, Mary Torres of Westhoff, Ellie L. (Joe) Gonzales of Cuero, and Gloria L. (Domingo) Barron of Westhoff; three brothers, Ben (Ellie) Licon of Lubbock, Ortino Licon Jr. of Fort Worth, and Daniel (Andrea) Licon of Westhoff; three grandchildren, Ruben Mangus (Kayla Roberts), Marissa (Tim) Baisden, and William Charles Licon II; and two great-grandchildren, Brayden Baisden and Carter Mangus.

Mary Ann Korth Leask

Mary Ann Korth Leask was born August 25,1931 in Yorktown and passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2013 in Birmingham, Ala. 
 
The youngest daughter of Herman Henry Korth and Mary Wilson Korth, she was raised in Texas and Alabama. 
 
She is survived by her daughters Lindle Leask, Mary Ann Blair (and husband Frank Blair), Katherine Leask (and husband Dana Kramer), and Jane Leask; grandchildren, Milam Saxon Tourbez (and husband Remi Tourbez), Jessamyn Saxon, Cecili Blair (and husband Cory Smith), and Alex Blair; great-granddaughter Juliette Tourbez; nieces Margaret Johnston and Joanne Taylor; and nephews Nabil, Teymour, Sharif and Farid Rushdi. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Mary; husband, Arthur; sisters, Grace and Phyllis; close cousins Rosa Lou Skinner and Frances von Roeder. 
 
She will be greatly missed by all her friends and family, but lovingly remembered as an avid reader and lover of animals, flowers, music, and cooking. 
 
She was laid to rest beside her beloved mother Mary, her dear Aunt Vera, and her grandfather Charles Wilson in Birmingham, Ala.
