Bobby Jeff McMahan, 82, passed away Aug. 2, 2016 at his home after a brave, hard fought battle with cancer. Bobby was born Jan. 5, 1934 to Charlie and Alice McMahan in the small community of Chicolete in DeWitt County.
For those of you reading this that never had the fortune of meeting this wonderful man, we will try to sum up a man who lived his life to the fullest in these few small paragraphs.
A lifelong resident of Cuero, Bobby spent his life serving others. He began by serving his country in the U.S. army during the Korean Conflict. He then served the residents of Dewitt County as Sheriff for 16 years, thus making him the longest serving Sheriff in the history of DeWitt County.
As many of you can attest Bobby was a true Texas lawman and believed in “equal justice for all.” He treated everyone with the same respect regardless of race or socioeconomic status. There have been countless people come forward in the last few months telling how Bobby helped them out in one way or another during his time as Sheriff. We have truly come to realize that he was a blessing not only to his family but to everyone he met.
An avid reader, Bobby loved a good western. He also enjoyed vacationing in Durango and Silverton with his wife Donna. His other hobbies included fishing and hunting. He cherished the time he spent fishing on the river with his daughter Linda and his hunting trips with his son Jeff. Fortunate for us he was generous with his stories so his life experiences will live with us forever.
Bobby was a member of the Masonic lodge and recently received his 50 year pin. He was also a member of the American Legion for over 40 years.
Bobby is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter Linda (Ray) Peterek; son Jeff (Denise) McMahan; stepsons Richard (Carrie) Startz and Charles (Sheila) Startz; grandchildren, Nicole (Jason) Anderson; Miranda (Will) Adams; Mikayla McMahan; Darren, Blake, Brett and Kelly Startz; great grandsons, Jackson Anderson and Brantley Adams; brother Jimmy McMahan.
Bobby was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia McMahan; his parents, and his brothers Kenneth, Wayne and Charlie McMahan.
Bobby will lie in state at Freund Funeral Home on Friday, Aug. 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Presbyterian Church in Cuero at 10 a.m. with Reverend Bill Cotman, Father David Berger and Deacon Leo Sharon officiating. Burial with Military and Law Enforcement Honors will follow at Hillside Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the Presbyterian Church fellowship hall immediately following the burial.
