Ramah Koenig O’Gorman was born on Dec. 12, 1938 in Cuero into a pioneer Texas family that traces its Texas roots to the time of the Republic of Texas. She was born into eternal life on Jan. 13, 2014.

She grew up in Cuero where she was the salutatorian at Cuero High School. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in biology from the University of the Incarnate Word. While a researcher at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, she met the love of her life, medical student Leo Dennis O’Gorman. After marrying in 1962, they raised a family together and shared more than fifty-one years of devoted and loving marriage.

After raising her children, Ramah pursued another dream, becoming an elementary school teacher. She earned a master of science in elementary education at the University of Houston Clear Lake, again graduating summa cum laude. She was elected into the Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key and Kappa Delta Pi honor societies. She then taught fourth grade at Rancho Isabella Elementary School in Angleton for many years. Named Rancho Isabella Teacher of the Year in 1991, she was nominated for Teacher of the Year in Angleton ISD and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. She positively impacted the lives of many students in and around Brazoria County.

A woman of great faith and a devout Catholic, she was an example of the Christian life. By action and by word up to the day of her death she taught her family the path to heaven. Her many roles in the church included service as Eucharistic minister, lector, and teacher of religious education. As part of the ministry to the sick, for many years she brought comfort and solace to parishioners who were confined to their homes, hospitals, or nursing homes. She was also active in her parish’s adoration ministry and resale shop.

Ramah and Leo were awarded the Bishop’s Medal of Recognition from the then Diocese of Galveston/Houston for outstanding service in establishing the diocesan Natural Family Planning program.

In addition to her involvement in the vhurch, she was engaged in a number of other volunteer activities including serving in the leadership of La Leche League, giving tours at Sea Center Texas, and teaching the wonders of nature to Texas school children as a Texas Parks and Wildlife Certified Master Naturalist.

In her free time she loved to garden and frequently visited Coastal Texas areas to observe and catalog birds with Leo. Though deeply rooted in Texas, she loved travel and learning about foreign cultures, people and cuisine. Particularly close to her heart were visiting friends in France and learning the French language. As an avid student of genealogy and her family’s Texas heritage, she was a proud member of the Castro Colonies Heritage Association and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was also a member of the Angleton Study Forum.

She was predeceased by her parents, Henry Joseph Koenig Sr. and Erna Juenger Koenig.

Peggy Strieber

Peggy Strieber was the youngest daughter of Louis Strieber and Mamie Crawford Strieber.  She was born January 21, 1922, as Marguerite Loretta Strieber, in Yorktown and passed away one day after celebrating her 92nd birthday in Yorktown. Family and friends will always remember her intelligence, quick wit and genuine affection for the people she met only once and those she knew all her life.

She could carry on a conversation with all who would engage in that discussion. She earned a degree in speech therapy at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio.  Peggy taught school in Nordheim and Yorktown and then became a teacher in schools in South America and Europe.

Her passion for education continued as she taught basic English to those who desired to become United States citizens, and speech therapy with the Easter Seals programs. Peggy and her seven siblings are all descendants of Johann Andreas Strieber, who brought his family to Texas in the late 1840s, and resided in Dewitt County at the time of the 1850 census. The sixth child of Johann and his wife, Johanne Henriette Schrader Strieber, Adolph Carl Strieber and his wife, Marie Wagenschine are the parents of Peggy's father.

Peggy was very proud of the heritage of her family and its involvement in Yorktown. She told many stories of the trips from Yorktown to San Antonio on the rutted roads after a rain, and the many fun things she and her siblings were introduced to in Yorktown.

The household was known in the community as a very happy, boisterous household. They even had what is today known as a "zip line" from the roof of the house to a tree in the area.

Two of her brothers were pilots and the young girls in the family were taken on flights in the biplane flown by brother Whitley Strieber.

She was a volunteer at the Yorktown Historical Museum and the Yorktown Library.

Her father operated M. Strieber and Sons, a dry goods store in Yorktown until 1943. The store had then been in existence for 50 years.

He and his wife invested in a number of business ventures in the area, including a cement block building machine, coach stallions, gentle buggy horses, and then building materials. Those materials were used in the building of the old City Hall, and in 1913, a new building for The Yorktown News. He also served as mayor of Yorktown from 1940 to 1945.

Her mother, Mamie Crawford, was the daughter of John Crawford and Mary Esther Miles Crawford. Mary Esther was the daughter of Edward Miles, a defender of Texas in the battles of Anahuac and San Jacinto. They taught their family of the importance of community involvement.

After his death, Mamie Strieber donated land in her husband's memory on which to build the Yorktown Hospital which was dedicated in 1951.

The Strieber’s had eight children, all born in Yorktown. Peggy was the youngest. Her only sister, Mamie Shepperd of Gladewater survives.

Other siblings who predeceased Peggy were Mary Esther Scholl, Karl Strieber, Louis Whitley Strieber, Gwen Carson, Edward Miles Strieber, and Madeleine Eades.

She is survived by four generations of the Louis and Mamie Strieber family, in homes all across this country and in Italy.

Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27 at Westside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Yorktown Historical Museum or Yorktown Library.
