Master Chief Petty Officer Charles R. “Charlie” Schlinke, U.S. Coast Guard Retired, 75, of Flower Mound, Texas died on April 2, 2014 at Rambling Oaks Courtyard Extensive Care Community, Highland Village, Texas, following a period of failing health. Charles had only been a resident of Flower Mound for 17 months.
Charlie was born in Nixon, Texas, March 21, 1939, the only son of the late Charlie and Ella Nora Schlinke. He resided in Nixon until his enlistment in the U.S. Coast Guard on August 7, 1956. He retired on May 31, 1980, as a Master Chief Boatswain Mate, having served over 24 years of honorable service. During those 24 years Charlie was stationed throughout the U.S. and abroad, most notably Turkey, Italy and Enewetak Atoll, a large coral atoll of 40 islands in the Pacific Ocean, better known as the Marshall Islands.
Following his military service, Charlie and his beautiful wife, Diana (Werner) Schlinke moved to Morgan City, LA where he worked as the Personnel Director at Newpark Marine. Several years later they moved back to his home of Nixon, Texas where he became a Deputy Sheriff of Gonzales County. They moved once again to Cuero, Texas to continue his law enforcement career with the DeWitt County Sheriff Department.
Charles retired from law enforcement in 1999. Charlie and Diana lived in Cuero for 25 years before moving to Flower Mound.
Charles is survived by his wife, Diana, and three children: Charles Bradford Schlinke of Austin, Texas; Darrell Scott Morrow of Hollis, New Hampshire and Lieutenant Commander Guy Allen Morrow of Bristow, Virginia, as well as six grandchildren one great-granddaughter.
