Joyce Shaw Borden, a rare lady, our dear friend, died on April 2, 2014 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was born on Christmas Eve, 1919 in Cuero, Texas to Harvey and Beatrice Shaw. She was the youngest of the three Shaw sisters. Joyce attended Cuero High School and like her sisters, Joyce was a top student. She attended Texas A & I College in Kingsville pursuing a liberal arts degree, but her college career was cut short by the death of her father and the Great Depression. She returned home to Cuero, taking a job with the Farmer’s State Bank beginning what was to become a lifelong business career. In 1939 she married John Burns Edgar of Cuero, TX who was later killed in action in Holland during World War II. She moved to Corpus Christi and went to work in various businesses and positions including Thomas-Spann Clinic. It is there she met and later married Dr. Gayle Spann in 1951. Dr. Spann died suddenly in 1970.

Joyce always loved the bright lights and was persuaded to move to San Antonio and work for various banks. She treasured San Antonio with its great shopping and cultural events. Joyce said she enjoyed working with the people in every job she held and the thought of not working every day was foreign to her hardworking persona.

In 1984, Joyce married Lew Borden and they enjoyed travel and their many friends both in Corpus Christi and their lake house in Seguin. After Lew Borden’s death in 1996 she moved to Victoria, where she lived until 2010 when she again moved back to Corpus Christi.

Joyce loved golf and watching all sports, but her true loves were shopping and travel. Noted for her fine taste in clothing and the arts, Joyce had a great eye for color and fashion. It was always said that if she was not a successful business woman, she could certainly own a clothing boutique.

She was proceeded in death by her parents and her oldest sisters, Jennie Shaw Brown and Bea Shaw Smith; her three husbands, John Burns Edgar, Gayle Spann, and Lew Borden. She is survived by her great nephews, Bruce Brown (Cuero), Terry Brown (Cuero) and Tim Brown (El Paso); her great nieces, Joyce Moeller (Cuero) and Linda Larson (Cuero); a step-daughter, Polly Spann Jacobs (Madison, Mississippi); and two step-sons, Jim Borden (Bend, Oregon) and Allen Borden (Corpus Christi).

A graveside service will be held Friday, April 4, 2014, at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero at 3 pm.

In lieu of flowers, Joyce would have appreciated any donations to your favorite charity.

A special word of thanks to the wonderful people at the Clairebridge Unit of Trinity Towers in Corpus Christi and Odyssey Hospice in Corpus Christi.
