Ralph Egg, 90, went to meet his Lord on October 27, 2014. He was born August 21, 1924 in Meyersville to the late Edwin “Joe” Egg and Cora Wendel Egg. Ralph joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 during World War II. After basic training, he reported to the U.S.S. Helm and narrowly escaped when a Japanese suicide plane hit their ship while at sea knocking off the top smoke stack. He returned home to Meyersville in 1946 and married Helen Mae Hartman on June 30, 1946, 24 days after his discharge from the Navy.

He was active in his church and community and was often referred to as the Mayor of Meyersville. He was one of the founders of Meyersville Volunteer Fire Department, President of the Meyersville School Board, and “held court” with his coffee buddies at the Meyersville Store. He served on the Board of Directors for Farmer’s State Bank and Agricultural Soil Conservation Service in Cuero. He operated a dairy farm from 1954 to 1996 and raised Beefmaster cattle with his son. Because of his love for the land and innovative ranching methods, he was awarded the Cuero Agriculture Award in 1995.

He loved to sit with friends on his front porch with a view of his cows and his church. St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church was a major part of his life serving as Sunday school teacher, church council President, Elder, and unofficial greeter to everyone visiting the cemetery.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Helen Mae Hartman Egg; daughters, Laurie Pokluda and husband, John, of Cuero and Kathy Dunn and husband, Blake, of Meyersville; son, Joel Egg and wife, Cindy, of Victoria; sisters, Ruth Moore and Joan Gohmert of Meyersville, and Alice Moring of Refugio; brother, Jimmy Egg of Mathis; grandchildren, Lisa and Carlos Salazar of Austin, Scott Pokluda of Meyersville, Amy and Jay Patton of Cedar Hill, Jonathan and Monica Pokluda of Dallas, Summer and John Helms of Chantilly, Virginia, Tara and Ty Vrana of Victoria, and Dana Egg and fiancé, Eric Mann, of Houston; and seven great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Mary Ellen Egg.

A prayer service and story sharing will was held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at Freund Funeral Home with visitation followed until 8 p.m. Services were held Thursday, October 30, 2014, at 10 a.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Meyersville with Pastor John Boor officiating. Interment followed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jonathan Pokluda, Scott Pokluda, Jay Patton, Carlos Salazar, John Helms, and Eric Mann. Honorary pallbearers were Brian Wendel, Don Wendel, and Randy Wendel.

Ralph never met a stranger. His passion for life, love for his Lord, and his sense of humor will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church Sunday School, Hospice of South Texas, or to the charity of one’s choosing.
