Irene L. Veit, 89, of Westhoff passed away Sunday, November 23, 2014. She was born on September 19, 1925, in Westhoff to the late Louise Baros and Edward Joseph Lukas. Irene graduated from Draughons Business School and worked at Home State Bank in Westhoff for many years. Upon leaving the bank, she moved to the Sample Community to stay home and raise her children. She was a mother first (raising five kids) but was very active in the daily operation of a commercial chicken farm and ranching for many years.
Irene loved to garden and had a green thumb to make almost anything grow, she was a great cook and had the best fried chicken around, she would sew and stitch while the "men" watched the Cowboys until she learned the game and became an avid fan herself. She enjoyed a cold beer at 5:00 with her husband and when she wasn't cooking she enjoyed pizza, DQ Tacos, and lemon cake. Vacations were few but she loved her trips to Colorado and she and Arthur could travel more miles in a day than anyone, and see everything. Irene also loved a new shiny car or a good used Cadillac. Most of all, she enjoyed her family, the simple things of country life and being a great mother and so much more without asking for anything in return.
She is survived by her four loving children, Melanie Driffill (Fred) of Floresville, Vonnie Jackson (Jeff) of Bandera, Mark Veit (Sammie) of Cuero, and Matt Veit of San Marcos; grandchildren, Chelsea and Garrett Veit, Katy and Jill Veit, and Lukas Jackson, Greg Driffill (Amanda) and family of Cibolo, Stephen Driffill (Jeanette) and family of San Antonio, and Emily Jackson of Williamsburg, VA; niece, Beverly Culbertson of Lexington, KY; nephews, Gerald (Buddy) Deats of Dallas and James Deats of Ruidoso, NM; and many other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 50 years, Arthur Veit, Sr.; son, Arthur Veit, Jr.; and sisters, Ellen Deats and Addie Belle (Mitzie) Raney.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at the Freund Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at St. John Lutheran Church of Westhoff with Pastor William Hill officiating. Interment will follow at Westhoff Cemetery.
