Harlan Nagel, 86, of Cuero passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016. He was born Nov. 29, 1929 in the old Koehler House on the farm he lived and worked on his entire life. His parents, the late Henry A. and Olga Sager Nagel raised Harlan in the only church he knew his whole life. He was baptized, confirmed, married; and baptized and confirmed his children in the Zion Lutheran Church of Arneckeville.
He married Edieth Zengerle on Dec. 10, 1949. Edieth and Harlan shared 66 years of love. Survivors include daughters, Mary Leida (Steve) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Judy Hohne (Bob) of Houston; sons, Patrick Nagel and Robert Nagel both of Cuero; grandsons, Hans Leida (Sarah) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Nathan Nagel (Amy) of Clear Lake, Joshua and Matthew Hohne of Houston; great-grandchildren, Levi, Sam and Miles Leida of Minneapolis, Logan and Olivia Nagel of Clear Lake; sister-in-law Marjorie Schellenbarger of Cuero; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-laws Hilbert (Bernice), Edwin (Pearl White), Leon (Ruth); sister Elenore Nagel; and daughter-in-law Ann Nagel (wife of Robert).
Harlan was a proud farmer and rancher his entire life. In 1982 he was recognized by the County Soil & Water Conservation District for Resource Conservation. In spite of only having an elementary grade formal education, he was a life-long student and served on the Meyersville School Board many years as Treasurer. He also served on the county SWD and ASCS committees, the Zion Cemetery Committee and on the Zion Church Council, and director on the DeWitt County Producers Coop Board.
His children learned many life lessons from him, observing how he lived his life. Love of God, Family, Church and Community were learned by observing rather than lecturing.
