Lydia Dolezal Hermes, 96, of Sweet Home, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013.
She was born on Feb. 5, 1917 in Yoakum to the late John V. and Marie Kacir Dolezal.
Lydia married Eugene Hermes on Oct. 5, 1936 in Yoakum. Lydia and Eugene farmed and ranched near Sweet Home all their married life and were active parishioners of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sweet Home.
Lydia was a member of the Huth Memorial and Yoakum Community Hospitals Ladies Auxiliary (Pink Ladies) for many years and made dolls and embroidered items for them. She was also a member of the Queen of Peace Altar Society, the Catholic Family Fraternal (KJZT) and SPJST.
As a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she never forgot a birthday and everyone from the youngest to the oldest received a birthday card with some money included. It was the same for Christmas and Easter when the small children received a personalized small bag of candy and toys. Considering that the list included 53 individuals, that was quite a remarkable thing. She remembered everyone by name and age and to whom they belonged. As they graduated, got married and had children she never lost track of any of them. An accomplished seamstress, Lydia made quilts and keepsake handwork for her children and family. She was very humble and critical words did not exist in her vocabulary.
Lydia is survived by her daughters, Mary Rita Polansky of Cuero; daughter-in-law, Gladys Hermes of Koerth; sons and daughters-in-law, Leroy and Barbara Hermes of Houston and J.O. and Karen Hermes of Sweet Home; grandchildren and spouses, Cindy and Kent Neuvar, Anthony and Bonnie Hermes, Tom and Lisa Hermes, Robert and Terry Hermes, Susan and Kevin Wood, Scott and Leslye Hermes, Linda and Gene Valentino, Roni and Ray Cappadonna, Randy and Michelle Hermes, Rick Hermes and Elizabeth and Carl West; 28 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Michalec of Helotes; sister-in-law, Adeline Hermes of Victoria.
She was preceded in death by parents; husband of 63 years; daughter, Agnes Marie Hermes; son, Marcus Hermes; son-in-law, Jerome Polansky; grandsons, Bruce Hermes and Michael Polansky; brothers, Julius Arlitt, George Dolezal, James Dolezal and step-mother, Marie Pivoda Dolezal.
