Marjorie Ann Klaevemann

Marjorie Ann Klaevemann, lovingly known to her friends and family as “Margie,” went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. For the past 4½ years, she battled a rare and undiagnosed neurological brain disease, and the Lord finally called her to her heavenly home with her family by her side.

Margie was born October 27, 1942 in Nordheim, Texas. She grew up on the family farm and attended Nordheim High School, graduating as the salutatorian in 1961. Most importantly, during this time she fell in love with her soulmate and future husband, Bill Klaevemann. After high school she attended Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College where she graduated with honors, earning a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics and English in 1965.

After accepting her first teaching position in Victoria, Margie and Bill were joyfully united in Christ and in marriage on September 4, 1965. In 1966, they moved to Houston, and Margie continued to teach, but they knew big city life and frequent moves with Bill’s company wasn’t how they wanted to raise their future family. After the birth of their daughter Andrea in 1971, Margie and Bill took a leap of faith and moved to Yorktown where Bill began working on his own and Margie stayed home and helped Bill with their new business. Three years later, their daughter Amy was born. Margie loved raising her girls more than teaching; she saw her role as wife and mother as her life’s calling. In 1980, she added to that joy with the birth of their son, Aaron.

Along with her constant smile, Margie will be remembered for her servant’s heart and her love for and devotion to her family. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and the written word, and she tirelessly shared these passions in joyful service to the Lord and others. She offered her talents at her church, St. Paul Lutheran, where she was active with WELCA, call committees, the youth group, Sunday school, and Eucharistic ministry, to name a few. Her service, though, reached far beyond the walls of the church and also into the community and lives of others. Margie showed Christ’s love by taking meals to sick friends; visiting with and listening to friends and even strangers in need; and sending notes of encouragement to anyone she thought might need to hear a kind word. Above all things, Margie adored her family. Top on her list was spending time with those she loved most. Whether it was watching sports and eating ice cream with Bill; driving to visit her children and grandchildren; creating the perfect weekend when her family visited, complete with peanut-butter popcorn and chocolate cream pie; shopping with her girls in Canton; or sewing dress-up clothes for her granddaughters, Margie’s first priority was her family.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Ellie Gips. She is survived by her cherished helpmate, best friend, and beloved husband of 49 years, Bill; her daughter Andrea Ingram and husband Shannon of Bulverde; her daughter Amy Walter and husband David of San Antonio; her son Aaron of College Station; her beloved grandchildren and playmates Elizabeth, Emily, Olivia, and John; her sister Sharon Salyer and husband Larry; her best friend Susan Howle; and countless other family and friends.

Margie’s life was a rich one, with no moment wasted. Although the last years of her life were difficult, God blessed her every moment with the support of those who love her, and she undoubtedly is smiling and walking with her Savior in eternity: “Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you. For you, Lord, have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living…Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.” (Psalm 116:7-9, 15)

Visitation will be Saturday, July 5 from 6 - 8  p.m. at Massey Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Sunday, July 6 at 2  p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Yorktown, Texas. Interment will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers are Bill Bargmann, Jay Heil, Charles Klaevemann, Chris Klaevemann, Thomas Smiley, and Manroy  Wolpman. Honorary pallbearers are Vickie Reyes, Dolores Rosales, Margie Alvarez, Louisa Alvarez, and Susan Howle. The family especially thanks Hospice of South Texas, Dr. Gordon Barth, and Dr. Gustavo Roman for their excellent and compassionate care of Margie throughout her illness.
You are invited to sign the online guest book at www.masseyfh.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of South Texas, www.hospiceofsouthtexas.org, 605 East Locust Avenue, Victoria, TX 77901; Lutheran Social Services of the South, www.lsss.org, 8305 Cross Park Drive, Austin, TX 78754; or the donor’s choice.

Hodge Edward Lord

Hodge Edward Lord, age 88, passed away on June 27, 2014.

Hodge was the youngest of nine children born in Pleasanton on Jan. 2, 1926 to Hodge Pleasant Lord and Sallie Robinson Lord. He was the first of his siblings to be born in a hospital and the family, lacking cash, paid for the delivery in livestock. As a sixth generation Texan, young Hodge grew up hearing and loving stories of the Texas frontier: of cowboys and Comanches, rangers and outlaws. He also listened to accounts how his own ancestor, Andrew Kent rode with the Immortal 32 from Gonzales to take a final stand along with Travis and Crockett at the Alamo. He also learned how his other ancestor, George Lord survived the ill-fated Mier Expedition and Black Bean lottery to become a landowner and family patriarch in Cheapside. Hodge’s family moved from Westhoff to Kerrville then San Antonio before eventually settling in Millett. Hodge Jr. attended Cotulla High School and helped his father and siblings with farm and ranch work. Favorite past times were sports, hunting, fishing, reading and listening to the radio. By 1943 the world was engulfed in the flames of war and 17-year-old Hodge left home to enlist in the United States Marines. He won awards for his sharp shooting and after boot camp training at Camp Pendleton, was on a ship bound for the South Pacific. Serving with the 1st Division, the Old Breed, Hodge saw combat in the jungles of Saipan, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu and Okinawa. As a Rifleman, the “tip of the spear,” as Robert Sledge recounted in With the Old Breed, some of Hodge’s duties were to clean out caves and tunnels of entrenched Japanese soldiers. At Okinawa, he shared a meal with famed war correspondent Ernie Pyle, who was killed the following day. Hodge saw many of his buddies maimed or killed and was wounded many times himself, almost dying from gunshot wounds he suffered at Okinawa. Hodge served as an Embassy guard in China for a year as well. When asked if he regretted his service to his country, he replied, “No. Freedom is something that shouldn’t be enjoyed unless you are willing to defend it and that’s what we did.” Following the war, Hodge returned to South Texas and attended Texas A&I, but dropped out to help on the family farm. In 1956 he joined the Texas Highway Department in Pearsall. and worked for 25 years, helping build Interstate 35. When he joined the department he only wanted to work until the drought ended, and often joked, “It was the longest drought in history!” In 1957, he married Bonnie O’Neall and raised four children in Pearsall and Sabinal. He served on the school board, retired from the state in 1982 and was a member of the Masonic lodge for 50 years. After retirement, he resumed his love of farming and ranching, working as ranch foreman for Kincaid Land & Cattle Co. near Eagle Pass for 27 years. Hodge was fluent in Spanish and loved the adventure of working on the border. He reluctantly retired at the age of 80 due to health problems and resided in Sabinal. In 2013, he moved to Cuero, where he spent the reminder of his life. Everywhere Hodge went he made friends with his warmth, humor, outgoing nature, stories; and by following the Marine Corp motto Semper Fi.

He is preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings, and daughter Rebecca Lord. Those left to honor his memory are his children, Brenda Lord of Cuero, Jennifer Lord of Kerrville, Kent Lord of San Antonio. His grandchildren Cameron Koppes, Caitlin Koppes, Clara Beth Kelly, Alexandra Moos, Eli Shurberg, Ethan Shurberg, and Grecia Lord.

The family would like to give their sincerest thanks to longtime friend James Kincaid, caregiver Jaime Davis, Dr. Raymond Reese of Cuero for his compassionate care and Cuero Nursing and Rehab Center for their loving care of our father.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 3 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX.

Arrangements entrusted to Peter’s Funeral home in Cotulla, 830-879-2615.

Melton Tidwell Pearson

Melton Tidwell Pearson, 89, of Cuero passed away Friday, July 11 2014 in Cuero, TX.

He was born on October 10, 1924, in Waco, TX to the late Charles Wesley Pearson and Ollie Mae Martin Pearson. Melton was raised in a pastor’s home in Rocksprings, TX. In his youth, Melton developed a love for fishing during family trips to Rockport, TX.

Melton enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 11, 1941, the day after his seventeenth birthday, and was honorably discharged on November 5, 1945 as a Yeoman First Class. Melton served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Converse, a Fletcher-class destroyer that received the Navy Occupation Service Medal and 11 bronze service stars. The USS Converse was a part of Destroyer Squadron Twenty Three that was the only squadron to receive the Presidential Unit Citation in WWII. It was known as “one lucky ship, as well as a great ship, a ship to be envied.” It was hit once by a Japanese torpedo that failed to detonate. Admiral Arleigh (31 knot) Burke stated “The USS Converse was indeed a great, great ship, but the Lord was indeed watching over her, too. Without Divine guidance, no ship could have endured so much, so long, as did the USS Converse.”

Melton attended Del Mar College and Corpus Christi University and was ordained as a Minister in Wimberley, TX. Melton worked with Stauffer Chemical and left to manage Standard Spray Chemical Company in Lakeland, FL where he and his wife (Ava Elizabeth David) raised their four children. Melton semi-retired in 1968 and relocated his family to Rockport, TX to enjoy his love for fishing and horticulture where he founded Pearson’s Garden Center.

After living in San Antonio and Fredericksburg for many years, Melton relocated to Cuero, TX to be closer to his youngest daughter, Helen.

Melton is survived by his brother, Leroy, Houston, TX; sister Dorothy Vandeveer, Temple, TX; two sons, Melton Lee Pearson and his wife, Linda, of Auburndale, FL, James Edward Pearson and his wife, Maclina, of Lakeland, FL; and two daughters, Ava Burton Kaiser and her husband, Don, of San Antonio, TX, Helen Elizabeth Reese and her husband, Ray, of Cuero, TX. He has 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Cecil Pearson and Charles Pearson.

The family wishes to thank the Alz Care staff in Cuero, TX who lovingly cared for “Pearson” (as he was affectionately known) during his last years.

The family is planning a private memorial for Melton in Rockport, TX at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the First Baptist Church of Cuero, 408 N. Gonzales St., Cuero, TX 77954.
