Jan Marie Barber

Jan Marie Barber, 65, of Globe, Arizona died on Nov. 8th, 2015 after battling cancer for four years. Jan was born on Christmas Day, 1949 in Cuero, to Olene Brantley (Prasek) and Travis Joel Barber. Jan graduated from Cuero High School in 1968 and then went on to get her bachelor’s degree at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.

Jan was so talented and enjoyed so many things but nothing brought her more joy than being a mother and grandmother.

That love of children is what led her to be a teacher that included many grade levels, art, and later being a director of Special Education after getting her Master's degree. She was a loving and supportive voice that encouraged so many people to pursue their talents and artistic gifts. One of her proudest accomplishments was while teaching on the San Carlos Apache reservation where she had the privilege of being the sponsor for the Apache Crown Dancers, even taking them to perform at the Super Bowl in 1996. She loved running into her former students (now grown adults themselves) and learn what an impact she had on their lives.

Jan will be remembered as a talented artist with her work on display throughout many of the homes and businesses in her hometowns of Cuero and Globe. Over the years, people would come to her to paint or draw a building that was significant to them. She once said that they weren’t just buildings to her; that when she turned the photographs into art, she would imagine their stories and the history that belonged to each one.

She recently added published author to her many talents with the release of “Out of the Darkness, Into the Lightning,” a book about an unsolved murder that happened over 100 years ago.

Jan loved spending her free time with her beloved, Tom Thompson, at their cabin in the mountains. There she would spend her time hiking, rock hunting, animal watching, painting, and appreciating the beauty of Arizona.

She is survived by the love her life, Tom Thompson; her children: Shawn, Jason, Jeremiah (and spouse, Tammy), Shanna, and Gabriel Kurtz; grandchildren, Emory, Alexis, and Diesel Kurtz; half sister: Jeanette Barber; and too many cousins to count.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Olene Brantley Prasek; father, Travis Joel Barber; and half sister, Patricia Wendel.

Jan Barber was truly a light in so many lives with her remarkable ability of creating new friendships and maintaining old ones throughout her life. She was a loving mother, friend, and mentor that will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m., at Lifeway Church with Pastor Glen Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Bundick Cemetery in Smiley.

Linda Sigmund

Linda Beatrice Sigmund, 69, of Cuero passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2015 following a sudden illness. Linda was born Feb. 10, 1946 in Cuero to the late Clara Hadamek Sigmund and Glenn Floyd Sigmund, Sr. She was a lifelong resident of Cuero where she grew up with her brother and sister in a wonderful, loving home. She attended Cuero schools and began what would become a career spanning 52 years of service with Davis Plumbing Company, which is now Davis Contractors. She started working there part time during high school and was the company’s Office Manager right up until her recent departure. She enjoyed her work and coworkers so much she delayed retirement until “later.” Linda was especially fond of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Davis, who were close friends.

The love of her life was Ray Leggett, also of Cuero, who shared many fun times over the years together. Outside of work, Linda enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and gardening, and she was an extraordinary “Aunt Linda” to eight nieces, one nephew and numerous great nieces and nephews. Being much younger than her siblings, Linda held almost “Sister” status to her siblings’ children who adored her. She was always present in huge ways in their lives and never missed an opportunity to show her affection and, of course, her sense of humor. She loved to joke around, play pranks and was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan who loved to promote her team and simply enjoy her family.

She also had an equal affection for her friends, often baking special desserts for which she became very well known. Her love of animals was contagious, and she always had many special pets that she loved dearly.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents and older brother and sister.

Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 20 at Freund Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 21 at Freund Funeral Home in Cuero beginning at 2 p.m. with Ms. Mary Ann Flessner officiating.

Carey James was born on July 14, 1929 in San Antonio. She passed away in Houston on Nov. 24, 2015 at the age of 86. She was raised in Cuero and was crowned a princess in the 1947 Cuero Turkey Trot. Many of her summers were spent in Monterey, California with her father, stepmother and sister. She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas where she met her future husband of 56 years, R. Blair James. She was a member of the Zeta Sorority at Southwestern. Carey and Blair were married in 1949 and because of Blair’s oilfield career; the growing family subsequently lived in Kenedy, Pleasanton, Cuero, San Antonio, Mcallen, Corpus Christi and Houston.

She was pre-deceased by: husband R. Blair James, mother Janie Bell White Turner and father Tommy Turner and stepmother Peggy Foster mother Anna Belle Burns Haak and father Julius Haak, sister Abigail Turner Macdonald and husband Mc Mcdonald and niece Linda Gliebe.

She is survived by: daughter, Barbara Gail Fuller, sons, R. Blair James Jr. and W. Brad James and wife Janet, grandchildren R. Blair James III and wife Rachel Erin James Johnson and husband Seth M. The love of her life was her family and everything she did centered around her children and grandchildren. Carey’s formative years were spent growing up during the great depression, and she never forgot the hardships the family experienced during those trying times. Regardless, she and Blair worked hard to ensure that their children had all the things that they didn’t have growing up and made sure everyone went to college. Just prior to her passing, she was elated to find out that her oldest grand daughter, Erin, is expecting her first child.

One of her main interests was Texas history. She was extremely proud of her Texas heritage and is from a pioneering Texas family with history dating back prior to 1820 when texas was part of Mexico. Her ancestors fought in almost every battle of the Texas Revolution. Her great-grandmother was in the “run-away-scrape” shortly after the fall of the Alamo. Later her great-grandfather founded the Chisholm Trail and her grandfather made seven trail drives. Her current home in Cuero was built with the proceeds from his last drive in the late 1880’s.
