Peggy Strieber was the youngest daughter of Louis Strieber and Mamie Crawford Strieber. She was born January 21, 1922, as Marguerite Loretta Strieber, in Yorktown and passed away one day after celebrating her 92nd birthday in Yorktown. Family and friends will always remember her intelligence, quick wit and genuine affection for the people she met only once and those she knew all her life.
She could carry on a conversation with all who would engage in that discussion. She earned a degree in speech therapy at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio. Peggy taught school in Nordheim and Yorktown and then became a teacher in schools in South America and Europe.
Her passion for education continued as she taught basic English to those who desired to become United States citizens, and speech therapy with the Easter Seals programs. Peggy and her seven siblings are all descendants of Johann Andreas Strieber, who brought his family to Texas in the late 1840s, and resided in Dewitt County at the time of the 1850 census. The sixth child of Johann and his wife, Johanne Henriette Schrader Strieber, Adolph Carl Strieber and his wife, Marie Wagenschine are the parents of Peggy's father.
Peggy was very proud of the heritage of her family and its involvement in Yorktown. She told many stories of the trips from Yorktown to San Antonio on the rutted roads after a rain, and the many fun things she and her siblings were introduced to in Yorktown.
The household was known in the community as a very happy, boisterous household. They even had what is today known as a "zip line" from the roof of the house to a tree in the area.
Two of her brothers were pilots and the young girls in the family were taken on flights in the biplane flown by brother Whitley Strieber.
She was a volunteer at the Yorktown Historical Museum and the Yorktown Library.
Her father operated M. Strieber and Sons, a dry goods store in Yorktown until 1943. The store had then been in existence for 50 years.
He and his wife invested in a number of business ventures in the area, including a cement block building machine, coach stallions, gentle buggy horses, and then building materials. Those materials were used in the building of the old City Hall, and in 1913, a new building for The Yorktown News. He also served as mayor of Yorktown from 1940 to 1945.
Her mother, Mamie Crawford, was the daughter of John Crawford and Mary Esther Miles Crawford. Mary Esther was the daughter of Edward Miles, a defender of Texas in the battles of Anahuac and San Jacinto. They taught their family of the importance of community involvement.
After his death, Mamie Strieber donated land in her husband's memory on which to build the Yorktown Hospital which was dedicated in 1951.
The Strieber’s had eight children, all born in Yorktown. Peggy was the youngest. Her only sister, Mamie Shepperd of Gladewater survives.
Other siblings who predeceased Peggy were Mary Esther Scholl, Karl Strieber, Louis Whitley Strieber, Gwen Carson, Edward Miles Strieber, and Madeleine Eades.
She is survived by four generations of the Louis and Mamie Strieber family, in homes all across this country and in Italy.
Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27 at Westside Cemetery.
