Merlene Brewer

Merlene Burton Brewer, age 95, of Cuero, passed away peacefully on Nov. 3, 2016. She was born on May 22, 1921 to the late Charlie and Lula Mae Burton in Wooters, (Houston County) Texas. She grew up in The Heights, Houston, Texas and graduated from Reagan High School. She married Eugene “Gene” Brewer on Feb. 28, 1941. 

She was retired from the Public Works Department, City of Houston and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cuero and Park Place Chapter No. 731, Order of the Eastern Star, Houston. She was a Pink Lady volunteer with Northeast Medical Center in Humble, Texas and later, Cuero Community Hospital in Cuero. Merlene is survived by her son, Jerry E. Brewer and wife, Virginia of Katy, Texas, daughters, Verna Dobbs of Houston and Susie Albert and husband Chuck of Cuero. 

She is survived by five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous other family members. Preceded in death by parents, her husband, brother, Carl and son-in-law, Wayne Dobbs. A memorial service for family and friends will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Cuero, with Reverend Bill Cotman officiating. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospitals, Hospice of South Texas in Victoria, First Presbyterian Church of Cuero Building Fund or the charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank the nurses of Cuero Nursing & Rehab, the staff and nurses at Hospice of South Texas, Reverends Bill Cotman and Andrew Lemlyn and Marcellus Wesley of Grace Funeral Home.
