Ulysses Screws, Jr.

Ulysses Screws Jr. was born on Oct. 20, 1951 to Ulysses Screws Sr. and Emma Lue Screws in Cottonton, Alabama. He was the second of four children.

Ulysses began his education in Pittsview School District, in Pittsview, Alabama. He graduated as the Valedictorian of his class in 1969, and continued his education at Alabama A&M University. He was employed at American Electric Power Company, where he retired after 33 years of service.

Ulysses accepted Christ and began to serve the Lord while under the leadership of Bro. Frank Barron at World Mission Church.

Ulysses met the love of his life, Joyce Ann Monroe, in 1977. They married on Dec. 2, 1978 in San Antonio. As he loved and worked tirelessly, he also was a pillar of strength for his best friend for the duration of their 37 year marriage. Through this union were born three beautiful children.

Faithful in his walk with the Lord, he also remained a devoted member of New Testament Holiness Church (NTHC) in Cuero, Texas under the pastoral leadership of Bro. Calvis Brooks until present day. He served as an Associate Pastor, Vice President of the Church Board, Musician, and Director of Maintenance, and much more at NTHC.

On Sunday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m., Ulysses departed this life peacefully and was escorted into the presence of God by his family as they sang one of his favorite praise and worship songs at his bedside. He is proceeded in death by his father, Ulysses Screws, Sr.;  mother, Emma Lue Screws; one brother, Colvis Screws; paternal and maternal grandparents.

Ulysses leaves to cherish his legacy, his wife Joyce Screws; children, Marco Dewayne Screws (Sade) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Krystle LeAnn (Jeremiah) Tumlinson of Midland and Brittnye Dione Screws of San Antonio; grandchildren, Caleb Terell Screws, Laila Alani Screws, Samaria Olevia Screws, Saniyah Savannah Screws and Quinn Ivy Tumlinson; sisters, Geraldine S. Walton of Eutaw, Alabama; Lenoria H. (Stanley) Packer of Louisville, Kentucky, four uncles, one aunt, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and cousins.

Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. at New Testament Holiness Church with Bro. Calvis Brooks officiating. Interment to follow in Hillside Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Cedrick Johnson,  Kenneth Brooks, Chaun Brooks, John White, Lance Tumlinson, Ted Caldwell, Timothy Webb, Jea’Mann Body and Camden Body-Chavez. Honorable Pallbearers are Clovis Screws Jr., Normon Screws, Woodrow Crane Jr and Reginal Screws, Raymond Taylor, Earnest Taylor, Troy Body, William Chatman and Benjamin Brooks.

The Screws family would like to thank all of you for your expressions of love and care throughout Ulysses’ illness. Thank you for your prayers and support. We also want to give special thanks to Detar Hospital and their ICU team, as well as Cuero Hospital. Thank you again and God bless you.
